Seed Depth: 1/4 inch
Seed Spacing: 24–36 inches
Row Spacing: 36–48 inches
Sunlight: Full sun
Days to Sprout: 7–14 days
Days to Maturity: 75–80 days
Growth Habit: Determinate
Sunlight: Choose a location that receives full sun for at least 6–8 hours daily. Tomatoes thrive in warm, sunny conditions.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Amend with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage. Tomatoes are heavy feeders and perform best in nutrient-rich soil.
When to Plant: Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 60°F. In cooler climates, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date and transplant after soil has warmed.
Direct Sowing: Not recommended. Starting indoors produces stronger, more reliable plants.
Starting Indoors: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep soil evenly moist and maintain temperatures between 70–85°F. Transplant seedlings outdoors when 6–8 inches tall and frost danger has passed.
Transplanting: Space plants 24–36 inches apart in rows 36–48 inches apart. Plant deeply, burying two-thirds of the stem to encourage strong root development.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently to keep soil evenly moist. Irregular watering can cause problems like cracking and blossom-end rot. Water at the base, not over the leaves, to reduce disease risk.
Fertilizing: Tomatoes are heavy feeders. Mix compost in at planting, then feed lightly once the first flowers appear. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer, which makes lots of leaves but fewer tomatoes.
Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch after the soil warms to hold moisture steady, prevent splashing soil onto leaves, and reduce weeds.
Support: Even though Roma VF is determinate, it still needs support. Use a sturdy cage or stake to keep heavy fruit clusters off the ground and improve airflow.
Pruning: Minimal pruning only. Remove leaves touching the soil and any crowded lower growth for airflow, but don’t heavily prune determinate tomatoes.
Pest & Disease Notes: Roma VF is resistant to Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt but may still be affected by tomato hornworms, aphids, and whiteflies. Hand-pick large caterpillars and use insecticidal soap if needed. Blossom-end rot is not a pest but a common issue caused by inconsistent watering—maintain steady soil moisture to help prevent it.
When to Harvest: Harvest when fruits are fully red, firm, and slightly glossy. Roma tomatoes are typically ready about 75–80 days after transplanting.
How to Harvest: Gently twist or clip tomatoes from the vine to avoid damaging the plant. Pick regularly once fruit begins ripening to encourage continued production.
Harvesting Seeds: Scoop seeds from fully ripe tomatoes. Place seeds and gel in a small container with a little water and allow to ferment for 2–3 days to remove the gel coating. Rinse clean and dry thoroughly.
Storing Seeds: Store completely dry seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Properly stored tomato seeds remain viable for several years.
